Failed States/Creative Resistances is the name of the new triple set of vinyl compilations on Belfast, Banda Aceh and Kosovo punk scene. The project was done by Jim Donaghey and was part of his research in Ulster University. Don’t let the academic part deceive you! It is far from a conventional academic frame that approaches its subject with sterile eyes. Jim led the project in a real punk attitude and with honest social engagement. Beside Belfast, he made multiple trips to Indonesia and to Kosovo. He met with punks and punk enthusiasts, talked with them, listened to their records and inspired the local people to engage with the production process. The aim of his project is to destroy the common opinion that punk is an US and Eurocentric music. Here is a paragraph printed in the compilation:

“The project opens space for these punk communities in diverse parts of the world to express a collective identity of their respective scenes and for you to hear it, feel it, and begin to understand it. It also brings these three places into dialogue with each other. We’re short-circuiting the centralised flows of neo-colonial culture. Things looks different from the margins, and by putting these peripheral punks in direct contact we are reshaping our understanding for ‘global punk’”

Failed States/Creative Resistances is a real gem. The design is impressively energetic and the records are beautifully produced.
