YOBS: Fortune Teller – Single

Amy Britton reviews Fortune Teller, the new single from YOBS, to find a high energy burst of garage rock complete with visually arresting video

It doesn’t come much more exciting, full-throttle or attention grabbing than Liverpool’s YOBS, and new single release Fortune Teller very much reinforces this. Ahead of a debut full-length album release next year, and off the back of dome acclaimed live shows supporting the likes of fellow ear-splitters A Place To Bury Strangers and Alien Nosejob, the quartet have also announced that this release will be accompanied by two live headline shows this month (London’s Night Owl on 24th November and Liverpool’s Round The Corner on 25th November.)

Fortune Teller certainly provides some serious anticipation for all of this, giving a seriously exhilarating taste of things to come. Having recently signed to Fuzz Club, this is very much in keeping with the label’s general garage-tinged roster; the song is a rapid-fire blast of energy which gatecrashes the party, kisses the host’s girlfriend and rolls out of the door with no offer to tidy up in under two minutes. If its quick-fire, juddering slice of garage punk wasn’t enough of a brilliantly delirious assault on the senses, the band have also unveiled an equally attention-grabbing video, which basically beams a huge kaleidoscopic light into the eyes of the viewer. With its magic carpet and a glaring sunrise evocative of Kenneth Anger, the combination of heady exhilaration with mystical undertones mirrors the tone of the song perfectly. Watch here:

The band’s bassist, Alex Smith, describes the release as “the firestarter you’ve been waiting for,” and there is an undeniable feel of an aural Molotov cocktail of scuzzy guitars, pounding drums and Joey Ackland’s primal, unpolished vocals. Born laterally out of a pre-practice warm-up, the primitive sense of this record is completely natural. Make no mistake, YOBS are the real deal, and Fortune Teller is no doubt a mere taster of how much more gloriously raw excitement they have yet to bring us.
