Ears wide open when two of Europe’s finest punk rock bands team-up for a split LP. I am talking about Accidente (Madrid, Spain) and Nightwatchers (Toulouse, France) who contribute four and six songs respectively to the new release. Both bands again prove their talent for writing high energy punk rock tunes that are agressive and melodic. They are not play-acting their anger, at the core of these bands’ music lies […]

Early ’00s Portland, Oregon was a fertile and dynamic time and place for punk. The hazy, jaded eyes of nostalgia might call it a high-water mark. House shows and venues were plenty, and the scene was filled with a talented, incestuous group of misfits. Following the breakup of the OBSERVERS, Doug Burns connected with Hajji Husayn to form the RED DONS. The rotating group of collaborators who joined later included […]

The debut by Sydney’s R.M.F.C. is finally here. Its title is as solid as the music. Club Hits, thirteen of them, and all written, performed, recorded by Buz Clatworth. Club Hits starts with a suspense building intro song before the first highlight and my early favorite of the record kicks in. The short eggpunk blast Spectrum, a song that is followed by its moody and more arty twin Sterile Century. The remainder of Club Hits touches […]

The music of the exiled four-piece has become heavier, with distorted guitars and desolate vocals When we last heard at length from Lucidvox, with the 2020 album We Are, the band’s four members were living in Moscow, the breakout stars of a thriving post-punk scene that also boasted Glintshake, Shortparis, Inturist, and Gnoomes. The Russian invasion of Ukraine put an abrupt end to that as many of these bands scattered […]

It would seem that an explosive new EP from Buffalo’s Ismatic Guru is becoming a yearly tradition. Dating back to 2021 when they released their self-titled debut, the duo comprised of John Toohill (Science Man) and Bran Schlia (Clump) have returned yearly with a new batch of freaky “egg punk” leaning art punk weirdness. While the run time is always brief, the duo pack in as much wonky discordance as […]

More straightforward than À la Ô Terre, its predecessor released on Castle Face Records back in 2020, Électrons libres du québec is Population II’s sophomore album. On this new effort, produced by Emmanuel Éthier, the three-piece band - made up of singer/drummer Pierre-Luc Gratton, guitarist/keyboardist Tristan Lacombe and bassist Sébastien Provençal - delivers a heavy, psychedelic rock infused with feverish funk rhythms, a hint of jazz philosophy, a burst of early punk energy, and […]
