Hipbone Slim & The Kneejerks: From The Back Of Beyond

Not content with having already put out two albums this year, Hipbone Slim & The Kneejerks return with a dose of wild garage rock on their new EP.

Whether it’s under the moniker of Sir Bald Diddley, playing with the Kneetremblers or, like on this year’s double album release, the Kneejerks, Mark Painter is a man on a mission to keep the garage rock train a-rumbling, returning again, this time on Spinout Nuggets, with a great four-track EP of straight to the point tunes.

The trio, completed by Pete Scoundrel (The Cybermen) on bass and Bruce ‘Brash’ Brand (Thee Milkshakes, Thee Headcoats, The Masonics) on drums, launch straight into the frenzied wild ride of Where You Gone, the drums pounding a great rhythm while the organ wails beneath the urgent vocals. What a start! They keep that great organ sound going through the Kinks-like Hey Catalina that follows. When the solo hits, it’s a rough cut run up and down the neck, a short, sharp Dave Davis special.

Over on the flip side, the mood shifts to a more psych feel, a touch of ye-ye on Celandine with Scoundrel taking over on vocal duties. It grooves along over a minor key melody, a fuzz guitar line propping up menace from within beneath some top harmonies. A classic outro key change lifts the end of the song but does nothing to sway it from the seediness set somewhere within. With its unexpected twist after the first side, strong as it is, this may just be the highlight of the four songs, the set completed by the garage-wrecked-surf-mod instrumental title track.

As with many Spinout Nuggets releases these days, those 7″ slabs are of limited supply, so vinyl junkies need jump. Downloads are up on Bandcamp and you can checl out the full EP below.
