A magical celebration on the occasion of the 100th birth anniversary of Rexho Mulliqi!

Under the excellent direction of Gregory Charette and the enchanting piano interpretation by Andi Duraku, the “Kosovan Symphony” came to life in a performance full of colours.

According to Maestro Charette, “deciphering Mulliqi’s manuscripts proved to be a challenging yet rewarding journey, with the score filled with misprints and presumed mistakes. This past week wasn’t just about rehearsing; it was a blend of musicology and critical editing. The version you heard last night is close to definitive, but we acknowledge there’s more work to be done.”

Otherwise, this was the second interpretation of Mulliqi’s “Kosovan Symphony” by the Kosovo Philharmonic and the fifth in the entire history of the work. Despite the ongoing refinements, Mulliqi’s compositional prowess shone through, especially in the gorgeous second movement, reminiscent of late Debussy, Stravinsky, and even Gershwin.

But that wasn’t all! In the second half, we delved into the majestic world of Sibelius with the 2nd Symphony, adding another layer of musical brilliance to this night. This initiative marks the beginning of a three-year plan by the Philharmonic to perform all the Symphonies written by Sibelius.
