Between National Liberation and Gender Liberation: Women’s Political Engagement in Kosovo

Saturday, 07.11.2026 | 18:00
Kolektiv, Prizren

Eli Krasniqi is an anthropologist historian and writer. Her research explores gender, memory, social movements, historical inequalities, and marginalised histories. From 2018 to 2023, she taught and conducted research at the Southeast European History and Anthropology (SEEHA) working unit, Institute of History, University of Graz, where she is currently a guest researcher and a postdoctoral SEED fellow of University of Regensburg. Her work on public memory examines hierarchies and practices of memorialisation in post-war Kosovo. She has also researched families and patriarchy, as well as the clandestine resistance movement in Kosovo, commonly known as “Ilegalja,” with a growing focus on the movement’s gendered dimensions and archives. Her current research examines the historical presence of African-descended individuals and families in Southeast Europe from the late Ottoman period onwards, drawing on photographs, archival sources, and oral histories.

Today’s conversation, “Between National Liberation and Gender Liberation: Women’s Political Engagement in Kosovo,” will open with a reading of selected passages from Krasniqi’s essay “The Silences and Noises of a Decade: Intricate everyday life between memory and history of the ’90s,” published in Kosovo 2.0 last year. The reading will be followed by a discussion of women’s political engagement in Ilegalja during socialist Yugoslavia and the 1990s, its feminist dimensions, and its connections with contemporary feminist activism in Kosovo.
