Sunn O))), those robed Seattle wraiths who’ve spent decades crafting uncompromising, bone-rattling drones that demand as much respect as they do endurance, have inked a deal with Sub Pop—a fitting home for their seismic sound after teasing the partnership with a couple of singles back in 2023. Their debut on the label, the three-track EP “Eternity’s Pillars b/w Raise the Chalice & Reverential,” strips things back to the core duo of Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson, recorded in L.A. with producer Brad Wood for a raw, heavily saturated assault of electric guitars and synthesizers that feels like a ritualistic return to origins. Clocking in at around 30 minutes, this maxi-single refines it, channeling the meditative intensity that’s made them legends in the drone metal underground while nodding to spiritual and regional forebears through its evocative titles.
The opener, “Eternity’s Pillars,” sprawls across 14 minutes like a monolithic invocation, its layers of distortion and feedback building into a transcendent wall of sound inspired by Alice Coltrane’s mid-’80s TV program on music’s path to spiritual enlightenment—a fitting homage for a band that’s always blurred the lines between heavy metal and cosmic meditation. Flipping to the B-side, “Raise the Chalice” echoes a ’90s rallying cry from Northwest icon Ron Guardipee, delivering eight minutes of rumbling immersion that feels like lifting a goblet to the gods of gain and saturation. “Reverential” closes with a grinding salute to the pioneers who’ve shouldered the heaviest artistic burdens, its booming feedback and resonant honks creating a cathartic fade-out that rewards patient listeners with overtones that linger like echoes in a vast void.
In a discography packed with epic collaborations and expansive LPs, this EP stands out for its focused restraint, proving that O’Malley and Anderson alone can summon the same apocalyptic heft that defines Sunn O)))’s live robes-and-amplifiers spectacles. Available on vinyl and streaming, “Eternity’s Pillars b/w Raise the Chalice & Reverential” reaffirms why, in 2025, Sunn O))) remain the undisputed masters of turning volume into transcendence.
